Manganese
(Biochemistry)
Investigation : Manganese
Specimen type : Whole Blood
Spec container : EDTA
Volume required : 4 ml
Reference range : 70 - 280 nmol/L
Turnaround : <5 days

Whole blood lithium heparin samples also accepted.
Whole blood Manganese levels give an indication of chronic exposure.

Reference Range
Whole blood Manganese
70 - 280 nmol/L
Deficiency Although deficiency states are clearly documented in some animal species, evidence of deficiency in humans is less well defined.
Toxicity >360 nmol/L Potentially toxic levels. As excess manganese is excreted in the bile, this may occur where there is biliary stasis, particularly in patients on TPN. Manganese accumulation in the brain, may cause ‘Manganese-induced Parkinsonism’
